Our family winery in Chile
The Chilean family winery is located in the former Hacienda Santa Teresa de Llay with its manor house and century-old park, which was declared a National Historic Monument in 2008. In this boutique winery, our family produces exceptional red wines on almost two hectares. The grapes are grown naturally and ecologically without the use of pesticides or other chemical products.
A large proportion of the vineyards are planted with Carménère and a small proportion with Syrah. The Carménère grape variety plays an important role for us, as it is an old grape variety that has been cultivated in Chile since 1850 and finds an ideal climate there. Carménère used to play a major role in French wines and is still one of the six grape varieties that can be cultivated in Bordeaux. With the infestation of phylloxera in the middle of the 19th century, the grape variety has almost completely disappeared there.
The terroir of the Aconcagua Valley offers excellent conditions for winegrowing, with very fertile soils fed by the waters of the Aconcagua River and intense sunlight. The fog from the Pacific Ocean also brings fine drops of water to the vines and the sometimes strong winds help the grapes to dry quickly. This is where the name Llay Llay comes from, which means "strong winds" in the original Mapudungun language.
